๐ [Numbers 9] The Second Passover Celebrated Before Leaving the Wilderness of Sinai
๐ Main Summary of Numbers 9
๐ Numbers 9 records two major events.
- One is the observance of Passover.
- The other is the marching order of the Israelites.
1️⃣ We should first examine the timing and circumstances of the second Passover
๐ There are several points worth considering in verse 1.
- "In the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt" → this was the first Passover observed after the Exodus.
- "The Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai" → the location specifically mentioned is Sinai.
→ Israel had arrived at Sinai about three months after leaving Egypt.
→ From that point through Exodus 40, Leviticus, and all the way to Numbers 9, there is no record of moving to another location. ๐
๐ Estimating the timing of God's command in the Wilderness of Sinai
- The Tabernacle was completed and dedicated on the first day of the first month of the second year after the Exodus (Exodus 40:17; Numbers 7:1).
- Afterward, the leaders of the twelve tribes brought their offerings over twelve consecutive days.
The reason for considering this timeline is the phrase found in verse 2:
"Let the children of Israel keep the Passover at its appointed time."
During the original Passover in Egypt, the lamb was selected on the tenth day and kept until the fourteenth day.
However, after the completion of the Tabernacle and the twelve days of offerings, it appears that only about two days remained before Passover.
๐ Therefore, the phrase "at its appointed time" seems to suggest that there was very little time left.
๐ Since this was the first Passover after the Exodus, God may also have been anticipating possible issues that could arise.
✔️ The Passover was observed exactly as God commanded.
๐ At that time, a problem arose.
Certain men had become ceremonially unclean through contact with a dead body and therefore could not participate in the Passover.
→ Moses brought the matter before the Lord.
→ God's answer was: observe it one month later.
Those who were unclean or away on a journey were still required to keep the Passover before the Lord.
๐ Interestingly, during the original Passover in Egypt, the entire nation was still in an unclean condition and had not undergone formal purification.
๐ God demonstrates that Passover was intended for all His people regardless of circumstances.
However, anyone who was able to participate and deliberately refused would be cut off from among the people.
✔️ The importance of Passover
- God warns those who treat this observance lightly.
- At the same time, He shows gracious understanding toward those who are genuinely unable to participate.
- Verse 10 shows that this principle would apply not only to that generation but also to future generations and even foreigners.
2️⃣ God teaches through the cloud
Verses 15–23 describe the cloud covering the Tabernacle and appearing as fire at night.
- When the cloud moved, Israel moved.
- When the cloud remained, Israel remained.
๐ Here we see God's remarkably smart and unique method of guidance.
๐ Perhaps after the questions raised concerning Passover, God provided a system that required no constant inquiries.
Moses did not need to ask.
God did not need to issue repeated commands.
The cloud itself became the signal for the entire nation.
3️⃣ The second Passover took place before leaving Sinai
The first Passover occurred before leaving Egypt.
The second Passover occurred before leaving the Wilderness of Sinai.
๐ Both were celebrated immediately before a major journey.
Conclusion
๐ The reason I emphasize the timing is that Numbers 9:1 itself provides the clue.
"In the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt, in the Wilderness of Sinai..."
- ๐ The verse first mentions the time and then the location.
I believe these details were intentionally recorded because they are important.
From Genesis through Numbers 9, it seems that not a single word has been written without purpose.
We observed a similar detail in Numbers 8 with the word "also."
Perhaps the treasures of Scripture are hidden in precisely these small details. ๐
