💎 [Numbers 27] The Path Moses Walked, the Path Our Ancestors Walked, Is Also the Path We Will One Day Walk...
📍 Key Summary of Numbers 27
1️⃣ The Inheritance Case of Zelophehad's Daughters (vv. 1–11)
During the census of Israel recorded in Numbers 26, the daughters of Zelophehad from the tribe of Manasseh, who had no brothers, came before the congregation and the Tent of Meeting to present their case.
"Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives."
📍 Through Moses, God declared that their request was right and established a new inheritance law:
- If a man has no son → the inheritance passes to his daughter.
- If he has no daughter → it passes to his brothers.
- If he has no brothers → it passes to his father's brothers.
- If there are no close relatives → it passes to the nearest family member.
God demonstrated both justice and compassion for those who might otherwise have been overlooked.
2️⃣ God Announces Moses' Death (vv. 12–14)
The Lord instructed Moses to go up Mount Abarim and view the land He had given to the Israelites.
Afterward, Moses would be gathered to his people, just as his brother Aaron had been.
God also reminded him of the reason:
"Because in the Desert of Zin, when the community rebelled, you did not uphold my holiness before their eyes at the waters."
📍 This refers to the waters of Meribah at Kadesh.
🙂 Even so, God granted Moses a long and healthy life.
As recorded in Deuteronomy 34:
"Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone."
3️⃣ Joshua Appointed as Moses' Successor (vv. 15–23)
Moses asked God to appoint a leader for the people after him.
The Lord chose Joshua and instructed Moses:
- Lay your hands on him.
- Present him before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation.
- Give him some of your authority.
God further instructed:
"He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Lord through the judgment of the Urim."
🔎 Understanding the Urim
In Exodus 28, we find the description of the high priest's sacred garments.
Among them was the Breastpiece of Judgment, containing twelve precious stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
Verse 30 says:
"Place the Urim and the Thummim in the Breastpiece of Judgment."
This suggests that the Urim and Thummim were objects kept within the breastpiece and used to seek God's guidance.
✔️ Therefore, when Joshua needed direction, the high priest was to approach God wearing the sacred garments and seek His will.
✔️ This helped the people understand that leadership decisions did not ultimately rest on Moses' authority, but on God's guidance.
📖 Final Reflection
God told Moses that he would be gathered to Aaron and to his ancestors.
The path Aaron walked.
The path our ancestors walked.
The path that one day we too will walk.
The final destination of our ancestors is God.
If there is a path, there must also be a destination.
And perhaps the only way to fully travel that path is through death itself.
I believe that the paths God has prepared are leading to a real place He has prepared for us. 🙂
