๐ [Numbers 10] From the Silver Trumpets to Hobab... All I Saw Was Grace
๐ Key Summary of Numbers 10
1️⃣ Two Silver Trumpets (Verses 1–10)
God commanded Moses to make two silver trumpets.
“Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.”
✔️ It seems God chose the most suitable metal for the task, and they were to be hammered into shape.
✔️ He also clearly stated their purpose: gathering the people and directing their journey.
๐ For such a vast nation, this was essentially the most advanced communication system available at the time.
๐ How the trumpets were used
๐ Only Aaron's sons, the priests, were authorized to blow them.
๐ข Soft blasts:
- Gathering the entire congregation.
- Summoning the leaders.
๐ข Loud blasts:
- Signaling the departure of the camps.
- Calling for battle.
- Celebrating festivals, new moons, burnt offerings, and fellowship offerings.
๐ God instructed them to sound the trumpets in battle so that they would remember that the Lord was with them.
The loud sound would strengthen the faith and courage of Israel while striking fear into their enemies.
2️⃣ The Ark of the Covenant Goes Ahead
In the second year, on the twentieth day of the second month, the cloud lifted from above the Tabernacle.
This timing may be connected to the events of Numbers 9.
Some Israelites had requested permission to observe the Passover in the second month, on the fourteenth day. ๐
After that, the two silver trumpets also needed to be prepared. ๐
๐ This observation comes from paying attention to the dates recorded in the text.
๐ Most importantly, the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of the people.
“The ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them for three days' journey to seek out a resting place for them.”
Later we see a similar pattern at the Jordan River.
๐ Before the people arrived, God was already seeking a place of rest for them.
3️⃣ The Tribal March and the Name of Hobab
The twelve tribes set out in the exact order previously established.
Their leaders are once again identified by their families and tribal lines.
In this context, Hobab appears.
Hobab, son of Reuel.
๐ The fact that Scripture records both Hobab's name and his father's name is noteworthy.
Just as the tribal leaders are identified through their genealogies, perhaps this record was preserving Hobab's family line for future references in the land of Canaan. ๐
Therefore, his personal and family identity may have been more significant than simply calling him “the priest of Midian.” ๐
4️⃣ Moses' Prayer
Whenever the Ark set out, Moses would say:
“Rise up, Lord! May Your enemies be scattered.”
Whenever it rested, he would say:
“Return, Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel.”
๐ In reality, it was not the Ark that needed rest. The text says that God was seeking a resting place for His people.
Conclusion
๐ The Bible is full of hidden treasures.
The name Hobab was a visible treasure in the text, yet I only recognized it at the very end.
✔️ Being able to see that treasure was simply an act of grace.
I am thankful for that grace. Amen.
