🌿 [Deuteronomy 1] Moses’ Sermon Teaching the Difference Between Disobedience and Obedience
📍 Summary of Deuteronomy 1
🔎 Deuteronomy 1:1–4 records the place and time of these events very specifically.
① Place
Moses spoke to the people in the land of Moab, beyond the Jordan. (vv. 1–2)
② Time
It was the first day of the eleventh month in the fortieth year after the Exodus. (v. 3)
③ Historical setting
This took place after the defeat of Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan. (v. 4)
👉 In the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan, Moses began to explain the Law to the people.
🔎 Moses recalls events from forty years earlier
In Deuteronomy 1, Moses reviews the events recorded in Numbers 10–14.
However, he does not merely repeat the history. Forty years later, he interprets these events and teaches the next generation.
1️⃣ The spies were sent at the people's request
In Numbers 13, it appears that God commanded the sending of the spies.
However, Deuteronomy 1:22 says:
“Then all of you came to me and said, ‘Let us send men ahead of us.’”
This shows that the proposal originated from the people.
💎 Deuteronomy 1 reveals a detail that is not clearly stated in Numbers: the idea of sending spies came from the people, and Moses approved their suggestion.
2️⃣ The people should have trusted God instead of fearing
The Israelites were afraid of the descendants of Anak and the fortified cities.
But Moses reminded them:
“The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you.” (v. 30)
“The LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son.” (v. 31)
Nevertheless,
“Yet in spite of this, you did not trust the LORD your God.” (v. 32)
The real problem was not the giants or the cities, but unbelief.
3️⃣ Those who would enter the Promised Land
God declared that the following would enter Canaan:
• Caleb son of Jephunneh
• Joshua son of Nun
• The children whom their parents feared would become captives
• The young children who did not yet know good from evil
In contrast, the Exodus generation would die in the wilderness because of their disobedience.
✍ Conclusion
Deuteronomy 1 is not merely a historical recollection.
Moses explains to the next generation why their parents wandered in the wilderness for forty years.
He reveals details not clearly seen in Numbers and demonstrates the consequences of unbelief.
Ultimately, Deuteronomy 1 teaches the next generation the difference between disobedience and obedience and the results that each brings.
