🌿 [Leviticus 21]: The Decrees for the High Priest and the Hidden Secret Within Them That We Must Realize...
📍 Core Summary of Leviticus 21
These are the words that the Lord God commanded Moses to speak to the priests, the descendants of Aaron. In other words, these are the commandments that the priests must observe.
1️⃣ Decrees for the Regular Priests (v. 1-9)
Touching a dead body, except in the case of the death of immediate family members, defiles a person.
God shows us that since a priest is a leader (elder) among the people, he must not defile himself and become profane.
They are commanded not to shave their heads bald or shave the edges of their beards.
(Note: This seems to mean they should not shave their heads completely as a pagan mourning ritual, not that cutting hair entirely is forbidden!)
They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced; instead, they must take a virgin from their people as a wife.
If a priest's daughter defiles herself by prostitution, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire (a severe punishment).
2️⃣ More Stringent Decrees for the High Priest (v. 10-15)
The high priest is the one on whose head the anointing oil (holy oil) has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the sacred garments; thus, a much higher level of holiness was required of him compared to regular priests.
He must not let his hair hang loose or tear his clothes. → This means he must not act like ordinary people during times of mourning.
He must not go near any dead body (it is recorded that he cannot defile himself even for his father or mother).
He is commanded not to leave the sanctuary (as doing so is considered defiling the sanctuary).
Regarding marriage, he must marry only a virgin from his own people.
(Note: Based on this regulation, it appears that marriage to a widow was permitted for regular priests, while strictly forbidden only for the High Priest).
3️⃣ Those with Physical Blemishes Cannot Perform Duties in the Sanctuary (v. 16-24)
This is a strict ordinance given to the descendants of Aaron regarding those who have any physical defect or blemish.
"He shall not go near the veil or approach the altar..."
God restricted those with various defects and disabilities, but verse 22 proves that this was not an act of disregarding their human dignity.
Even though they could not perform the duties at the altar, they were permitted to eat the most holy and holy food of their God, thereby ensuring their livelihood through divine grace.
"For he has a blemish, that he may not profane my sanctuaries, for I am the Lord who sanctifies them." (v. 23)
Closing Thoughts Looking through the Old Testament, we see that God demanded spotless offerings. He also required the High Priest to be a man without blemish.
✔️ If you ponder this deeply, you must realize God's true intention: why did He desire and demand something so completely flawless and without blemish?
✔️ The intention of the Lord God, who required a pure offering and a holy priest to cleanse the sins of the people.
✔️ And finally, I hope you, the readers, will fill in the blank space that has been left open: → ( )
