🌿 [Genesis 46–48] The "God of your father" who approached Jacob as he left Canaan, and His Blueprint

🙂 Inferring Jacob’s journey as he leaves the land of Canaan.

Hebron was Jacob’s spiritual home where he resided for a long time. I have mapped out his journey from here, passing through Beersheba toward the land of Goshen.

  • Hebron ➡️ Beersheba: approx. 40–45 km

  • Beersheba ➡️ Goshen: approx. 200–250 km

In my previous post, I spoke about feeling the pain and sorrow of the father, Jacob, through Joseph’s loud wailing.

🔗 [Genesis 40-45] Why Joseph had no choice but to cry out loud—the one fact he did not know.

1️⃣ Jacob Revives at the News of Joseph

At the end of Genesis 45, after agonizing over the safety of his youngest son Benjamin, Jacob’s children return with a message:

  • "Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt."

  • "God has made Joseph lord of all Egypt; come down to him without delay."

  • "The famine will last five more years; bring all your possessions and settle in the land of Goshen."

  • "Joseph will provide for you and all your household there..."

At first, it sounded like an absurd story, but the record states that Jacob "revived" only after seeing the wagons sent from Egypt (v. 27). This suggests Jacob’s physical health was likely failing. Now, nothing else matters to him.

"It is enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die." (v. 28)

This was no empty remark; it reads like a confession from a man who sensed his remaining days were not long.

2️⃣ God Approaches as "The God of Your Father"

Looking at the titles God used when appearing to Jacob:

  • First: "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac." (Gen 28:13)

  • Second: "I am God Almighty." (Gen 35:11)

However, in Genesis 46, God appears in a new way: 🔎 "I am... the God of your father." (v. 3) A "father" is a closer, more intimate figure than a grandfather. I believe this reflects God's heart.

3️⃣ A Promise Given with Comfort

God, who previously told Jacob to settle in the land of his ancestors, now tells him not to worry and to go to Egypt, giving him a promise (Gen 46:4):

  • "I will go down with you to Egypt" (Expressing intimacy)

  • "I will surely bring you up again" (A promise of responsibility even after death)

  • "Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes" (God confirming that Joseph is alive)

Jacob, whose health was expected to be poor, finds peace of mind and ends up living longer than anticipated. The Bible records that Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years, reaching the age of 147 (Gen 47:28).

➡️ Much like a severe emotional illness being healed and restoring life energy, Jacob seems to have enjoyed 17 years of blessing through spiritual and physical stability.

4️⃣ Jacob’s Desire to be Buried in Canaan

📍 Jacob demands that Joseph swear to bury him not in Egypt, but in the tomb of his ancestors. Joseph swears, "I will do as you say."

This goes beyond a simple will; it is a declaration that "You are a people who must eventually return," signifying the fulfillment of God’s promise to Jacob.

🙂 My Long-standing Question: Why Did Jacob Remain Silent Without Praying?

Every time I read this, I wondered why Jacob didn't pray regarding Joseph's situation. This time, I want to explore that curiosity.

When Jacob saw Joseph’s robe stained with goat’s blood—brought by his sons to deceive him—he concluded, "Some ferocious animal has devoured him; Joseph has surely been torn to pieces." While his mourning is recorded, there is no record of him seeking God or praying for an answer. (Gen 37:33-34)

🔎 Jacob in Contrast to Isaac In the case of his father, Isaac, it is recorded that when Jacob and Esau struggled in the womb, Isaac asked the Lord about it. I wonder if Jacob’s faith was different, contrasting with his father who asked God even about small things.

I recall Jacob's first encounter with God, where he said that if God provided everything for him, then He would be his God. After losing his beloved Rachel and his most cherished son Joseph, was he perhaps overwhelmed by "despair," closing the door of his heart and reverting to his old self?

✔️ Although the Bible is silent on this, I wonder if the conduct of his children represents a Jacob who had stopped acting.

➡️ Joseph's records show the brothers' behavior was worse than imaginable.

➡️ The story of Judah, seemingly inserted by force, was shocking.

🔗 [Genesis 37-39] Why Chapter 38 reveals Judah—The one who said "He is our blood" then sold him.

✔️ Jacob confesses before Pharaoh: "My years have been few and difficult."

Before he heads to Canaan, God appears as the God of his father

➡️ Confirming Joseph is alive, comforting him, telling him not to fear going to Egypt, and promising to lead him back to this land.

🔎 Why Did God Remain Silent to Jacob?

God did not appear to tell Jacob that Joseph was alive; He remained silent. To explain this, I will attempt to visualize "God's Blueprint," based strictly on the facts recorded in the Bible.

✔️ Since the explanation is the core, rather than the image itself, please read and reflect on it.

📍 I venture to guess God's Blueprint:

(Lord, You know this blueprint is for human understanding. Amen.)

  • Promise to Abraham: Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and will come out with great possessions. (Gen 15)

    • 🙂 So Jacob (Israel) absolutely must go to another country, right Lord?

  • Young Joseph’s Dream: For the sun, moon, and stars to bow down, Joseph must be in a high position. (Gen 37)

    • 🙂 Since Joseph became Prime Minister, the "dream" he had as a child was Your design, Lord?

  • The Next Design: d8kl;4'd99jl;f''\sd90--fkjks6cm,;'

🙂 I don’t know.

All I can see is that the wicked brothers became tools; Potiphar, his wife, the jailer, the cupbearer, and Pharaoh were all used by God.

  • 430 years later, the Israelites would leave Egypt after a period of comfort followed by 400 years of hardship.

🙂 Ah, it’s the fulfillment of the message given to Abraham. Thank You, Lord!

✏️ Was the reason God remained silent to Jacob because it was the time needed for young Joseph to become Prime Minister?

📌 God gave us a portion of the blueprint through the Bible to give us understanding. The rest, He seems to have left to each individual to discover what they need to learn.

Closing

Fortunately, Jacob regained his strength and received some compensation by spending 17 years with Joseph.

✔️ Watching Joseph work as the Prime Minister;
✔️ Amidst the playfulness of his rapidly increasing grandchildren;
✔️ His old age likely wasn't boring at all. 🙂
